International Contribution to ACiiTC Royal Commission Submission

May 17, 2019

The Aged Care Industry Information Technology Council (ACiiTC) held their third National Forum of the ACiiTC National Home Care Group and CIO Forum on Thursday 2 May 2019 in Melbourne.

The focus of the full day event was on ACiiTC submission to the Aged Care Royal Commission Quality and Safety collaboration with the National Home Care Group and CIO Forum Members.

A key area of focus of the consultation series involves Video Surveillance and Monitoring in aged care, exploring how this technology could and should be used to support safety and quality of care.

The first consultation by ACiiTC was held in Sydney 7 February 2019 and the second consultation was held in Brisbane 22 March 2019.

The third consultation on 2 May invited international experts to contribute their research to an international panel to discuss the nuances of this technology being part of the aged care landscape.

Newly appointed ACiiTC Chair, Dr George Margelis, ACiiTC Board Member Jennene Buckley and Committee Members Anne Livingstone, Rod Young and Gavin Tomlins joined Dr Kate Barnett OAM (who is assisting the ACiiTC to write the submission) and other attendees.

The International Panelist included Dr Malcolm Fisk, Craig Gear (Chief Executive Officer, Older Persons Advocacy Network) and Alistair Niemeijer. The panelist discussion concentrated on ethical, legal, oral and technical parameters on surveillance and monitoring in aged care.

The draft submission will be presented to the ACiiTC Board this week and will be submitted to the Royal Commission end of May 2019.
